Job Summary

This opportunity will be approximately 6 months in duration

The PBX Supervisor oversees the hospital telephone switchboard operations, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery for internal and external stakeholders. This role includes supervising and training PBX operators, scheduling staff, and maintaining operational continuity during emergencies or outages. Additionally, the PBX Supervisor contributes to department administration and upholds UCSF's standards of safety and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise PBX operations, ensuring quality and quantity of work.
  • Train staff on PBX equipment and operational procedures.
  • Create and manage employee schedules to ensure coverage, including on-call support.
  • Oversee adherence to hospital policies and emergency protocols.
  • Provide customer service and address complaints or service recovery needs.
  • Assist with department administrative functions as necessary.
  • Monitor and improve operational efficiency through strategic planning.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer literacy and typing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work under pressure.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality and hospital operations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with hospital PBX operations and training staff.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards, collective bargaining agreements, and medical terminology.
  • Prior experience in a union environment.
