Job Summary: Investigative Editor

The Minnesota Star Tribune is looking for a creative and ambitious editor to build and lead a team of investigative reporters, while also working collaboratively with accountability reporters and teams across our newsroom.

You are the right person for this job if the defining characteristic of your work as an investigative reporter and/or editor is stories that made an impact. The ideas are original or surprising. The reporting is fair, but tough-minded and revelatory.

And the writing? It sparkles and engages even the most time-pressed or skeptical of readers.

You are the right person for this job if you relish the challenges that come with it: rigorously vetting proposals; coaching journalists through every step of the reporting and writing process; prosecuting their findings to ensure they are rock solid and stand up to legal review; partnering with photographers, artists, data reporters, designers and audience to produce powerful, deeply engaging stories that rate among the best in the country.

You also relish the opportunity to build and lead a new team that will include Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists. You are willing to be a newsroom-wide resource for colleagues pursuing investigative and accountability stories. This may mean leading or helping shepherd deeply reported stories from writers in other departments, and taking a lead role in producing accountability stories and narratives during major breaking news events.

You will:

  • Supervise, edit and professionally develop a team of investigative reporters, while building fruitful relationships with journalists across the newsroom.
  • Generate and vet a diverse range of high-impact ideas that lead to exclusive stories of consequence, whether short-term investigations or longer-term, project-level journalism.
  • Work collaboratively with other teams across the newsroom, including photo, data and design, while pitching ideas for special projects.
  • Coordinate the long-term planning of the most in-depth stories, managing calendars, timelines and workflows.
  • Take a leadership role in the newsroom in developing investigative reporting skills and tools.
  • Ensure that resources used on high-impact reporting reflect the diversity of experiences and needs in Minnesota.

The ideal candidate has:

  • A track record of producing and/or guiding powerful and distinct, high-quality investigative work.
  • Excellent news judgment and a gift for inspiring and coaching talented, ambitious reporters with varying skill levels.
  • Superb story framing and line-editing skills, and the ability to think strategically about which big projects are worth assigning and investing time in.
  • Experience with investigative tools, including data analysis and document research.
  • A commitment to using modern-day digital tools, tracking and analyzing online audience trends and building strategies to engage readers.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, track budgets and multitask in a high-pressure environment.
  • A commitment to The Minnesota Star Tribune's standards, mission and values, including journalism that reflects the diversity of Minnesota and The Minnesota Star Tribune's audience.
