Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

As the largest unit on campus, the College of Arts and Sciences forms the academic core of the Carolina experience. UNC's Arts and Sciences Foundation exists to raise philanthropic support for the highest development priorities of the College of Arts and Sciences. Under the leadership and governance of its Board of Directors, and with support from alumni and friends of the College, the Foundation works to grow and steward the College's $500 million dollar endowment. In the recent Campaign for Carolina, the Foundation team raised over $764 million in the Campaign for Carolina, exceeding its goal of $750 million. The Foundation works collaboratively with University Development and almost every other School and Unit to maximize donor giving to the greater University benefit. Every gift to the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of North Carolina makes a positive impact.

The Arts and Sciences Foundation's mission is to enhance the College by meeting the needs of its academic departments, units, and centers; promoting teaching, research and service; and supporting the continued development of knowledge and learning.

Position Summary

The Foundation Accountant works within two teams within the larger Arts and Sciences Foundation - the operations and the donor relations teams. As part of the donor relations team, the Accountant oversees the annual receipt and collection of $40M - $50M in gifts, the fund management for over $500M in endowment funds, and hundreds of endowment and expendable fund disbursements to department accounts. The disbursement of endowment income and expendable funds to department accounts is essential as this is part of the Foundation's mission to benefit the College of Arts and Sciences. The Accountant also helps with developing budgets for gift proposals. The Accountant also works with the donor relations team on fund compliance to ensure funds are being spent and in accordance with donor intent. As part of the operations team, the Accountant manages the Foundation's annual external audit process, the IRS form 990 preparation, and state solicitation renewals. The Accountant is also responsible for developing and managing its operating budget which must be reviewed and approved by the Foundation's Board of Directors, and works closely with the Foundation's Business Officer in managing accounts payable. The Accountant is the final departmental approver for all Foundation related accounts payable transactions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Mid- to late-career with Masters and 2- 4 yrs experience; Bachelors and 3-5 yrs experience

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

- Ability to design and develop fiscal systems to maintain adequate control and reporting capabilities

- Ability to prepare and manage budget forecasts

- Ability to create budgets for gift proposals

- Ability to detect the need for improved fiscal records and systems of accounting

- Ability to make recommendations for changes in fiscal procedures

- Ability to prepare analytical/interpretive statements

- Highest integrity and ethics

- Proven ability to handle diverse and high volume workload with attention to accuracy and detail

- Familiarity and accomplishment with finance and accounting computer hardware and software, including Word, Excel, Windows, anAlsod spreadsheet creation/maintenance

- Excel expert and demonstrated ability to synthesize large sets of data using pivot tables, V-Lookups, etc. and present in a meaningful way.

- Strong understanding of GAAP principles for governmental and nonprofit organizations

- Experience with PeopleSoft (ConnectCarolina) or similar enterprise resource planning system and Blackbaud (DAVIE) or similar customer relationship management system

- Knowledge of applicable tax laws and accounting changes

- Ability to work well with higher education faculty, high-level administrators, and donors. Maintain strong working relationships with the College of Arts and Sciences Business Office, University Development Office and central Finance

- Ability to present information to, and work with, the finance chair of the Arts and Sciences Foundation Board

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

- Existing proficiency with Tableau

- Ability to balance accounting standards and fund compliance with creative budget development
