The UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences (VCMS), Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and Dean of the School of Marine Sciences reports to the Chancellor and is part of the Chancellor's Cabinet and leadership team. The VCMS, in consultation with the Chancellor, sets the overall vision and strategy for Scripps Institution of Oceanography's mission of excellence in education, research and community, with an emphasis on building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment. The VCMS serves as the Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Dean of the School of Marine Sciences and also leads philanthropy in collaboration with the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor for Advancement.

The VCMS must have a broad and diverse leadership skillset to manage a highly complex organization, and must collaborate in close partnership with the leadership of UC San Diego, fellow UC San Diego Vice Chancellors, Scripps Institution of Oceanography's (SIO) leadership, senior campus administrators, the University of California Regents, the Office of the President and key external constituencies, including NOAA, the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense and a diverse set of research institutions.

The VCMS is also responsible for a number of organizations and activities that serve the entire UC System, including:

• California Sea Grant College Program

• UC Ship Program and related facilities

• E.B. Scripps Research Pier

• UC San Diego Collections of Marine Invertebrates, Marine Vertebrates, Marine Plankton and the Sediment Core and Rock Collections

• California Cooperative Oceanographic and Fishery Investigations (CalCOFI) and the SIO Marine Science Development Center

The VCMS is responsible for relations with SIO campus tenants, including the NOAA Southwest Fishery Science Center, the Tuna Commission, and the U.S. Coast Guard Center of Excellence for Technology. The VCMS provides oversight for equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives as all levels, including those related to the student experience and academic programs, as well as those for faculty, researchers, technical and administrative staff. The VCMS represents and provides leadership nationally and internationally in scientific matters related to the ongoing research efforts of SIO scientists and researchers and related research across UC San Diego, as well as oversight of SIO relations with federal, state and local governmental entities, and private entities and individuals. The VCMS also provides substantial international advice and representation regarding ocean and climate policy, including for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

As Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the incumbent has overall responsibility for leadership and management of facilities, finances and budget, and staffing. The Director oversees international relations and policy programs and development, as well as administrative units, including Birch Aquarium and Museum and Ship Operations and Marine Technical Support. The Director is also responsible for several research units, including:

• the Climate, Atmospheric Science, and Physical Oceanography (CASPO) research division

• the Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine

• the Geosciences Research Division, the Integrative Oceanography Division

• the Marine Biology Research Division

• the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation

The Director oversees a wide variety of activities related to fostering innovation, business development and private sector relationships, including the Scripps Corporate Alliance, the StartBlue Accelerator and a variety of start-up competitions. The Director is also responsible for collaborating with UC San Diego Advancement for all fundraising related to SIO and UC San Diego Communications and Marketing for all communications, public relations and marketing. In addition, the incumbent coordinates and collaborates with UC San Diego Government and Community Relations regarding strategic coordination and integration of government advocacy and engagement with local, regional, state and national governments.

As the Dean of the School of Marine Sciences, the incumbent provides oversight and leadership for Educational Affairs and Academic Affairs, including graduate programs in the areas of Applied Ocean Science, Biological Oceanography, Climate Science, Geophysics, Geological Science, Marine Biology, Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, and Physical Oceanography, and for growing undergraduate programs in Geosciences, Marine Biology and Ocean and Atmospheric Science. The Dean is also responsible for fostering an equitable, diverse and inclusive student body and academic staff and for initiatives to enhance campus climate and culture. The Director allocates resources to support faculty and researchers, as well as the educational program. The Dean also collaborates with UC San Diego Alumni Relationship for all alumni affairs related to SIO.
