Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The UNCG School of Theatre's mission is to prepare students to be informed theatre practitioners with commitment to creativity, innovation, inclusion, and the advancement of the art form. The School recognizes the need to move toward creating an actively anti-racist and anti-biased space of creative practice by creating systemic change through workshops, continuing education, and professional development centered around antiracist practices, theatrical intimacy, and bettering ourselves in service of our diverse and international student body. Our community seeks candidates who are invested in creating communities of practice and care in which access is paramount. We have 22 full-time, professionally active faculty members who serve over 300 students in BA and BFA concentrations and in MFA programs in Theatre for Youth, Design, and Music Direction for Musical Theatre. The School mounts a yearly season of seven-to-eight plays and musicals, along with student-driven work and other types of performance opportunities. The School of Theatre is committed to creating and developing a diverse, engaged, artistically well-balanced body of future theatre professionals, performers, and teachers.
Position Summary
The School of Theatre at UNC Greensboro invites applications from candidates who are experienced with advancing equity and inclusivity in their teaching and creative practice. This tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank will begin August 1, 2025. Review of applications will begin January 17, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate & graduate courses in scene design; advanced scene design; scene painting; elements of design
  • Development of additional coursework in area of expertise
  • Experience in developing and creating syllabi and curricula that incorporate diverse cultural and disciplinary approaches to design and technology courses, fostering a holistic and inclusive perspective.
  • Supervision of SoT paint studio
  • Mentorship of student scene designers & scenic artists
  • Assisting in undergraduate and graduate recruitment
  • Serving on departmental, college, and university committees
  • Designing within the School of Theatre production season

Minimum Qualifications


  • MFA in Theatrical Design or equivalent professional experience with expertise in scene design and scenic artistry
  • Proficiency in drafting, rendering, and visual communication techniques
  • Active professional achievement as a scene designer
  • Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion in creative activity & research, teaching, or service

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing scenery for musicals
  • Experience with constructing stage properties
  • Experience with supervising a scenic painting studio and scenic painting
  • Familiarity with CAD (Vectorworks)
  • Familiarity with Projection Design & Technology
  • Experience with digital rendering technology and software (Photoshop; ProCreate; 3D Printing)
