Primary Purpose of the Position
Winston-Salem State University's Department of Computer Science has a dynamic group of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to learning, teaching, and advancing Computer Science. The department believes strongly in the individual worth of every student. Thus, the faculty's first priority is to deliver high-quality instruction to the students in every course in a student-centered environment. The faculty in the department is also a diverse group of respected and active scholars in the field. Therefore, collaboration in research and participation in departmental, College, and university service, as well as engaging in service to one's professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.

Winston-Salem State University ( WSSU) announces a national search for two (2) faculty positions in the Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education ( CASE). The full-time, nine-month Tenure-track positions will begin in August 2025. Established in 1991, the Department of Computer Science offers a highly successful ABET/ CAC-accredited B.S. Degree program in computer science and a B.S. degree program in information technology. The department also offers a M.S. degree program in computer science and information technology, two certificate programs in computer programming and data analytics, and minor programs in computer science and data science.
Position 1: We invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Cybersecurity. The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in Computer Science or a related field by August 2025. Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Information Technology's foundational, breadth, and depth areas. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to conduct and publish high-quality research, secure extramural funding, and mentor students inside and outside the classroom. We offer a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment with opportunities for collaboration across departments. Candidates committed to fostering diversity and inclusive excellence are strongly encouraged to apply.
Position 2: We also invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence. The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in Computer Science or a related field by August 2025. Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Information Technology's foundational, breadth, and depth areas. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to conduct and publish high-quality research, secure extramural funding, and mentor students inside and outside the classroom. We offer a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment with opportunities for collaboration across departments. Candidates committed to fostering diversity and inclusive excellence are strongly encouraged to apply.
Although the department will give special consideration to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and interdisciplinary research with expertise in cyber-security and artificial intelligence, expertise in other research areas of computer science will also be considered.
Candidates with an established research program, a history of outstanding publications, and extramural funding may be considered for one of the endowed professorships in computer science.
The candidates would be expected to provide outstanding teaching, research, and service to the professional discipline and the Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community; maintain the highest level of quality in undergraduate and graduate instruction to support the ABET-accredited
programs and other programs offered by the department. The candidate would be expected to attract external funding, contribute to the execution of the department and university strategic plan, demonstrate leveraging data to engage in the process of continuous improvement, work collaboratively with members of the department and other departments, committed to the principles of liberal education, and develop external collaborations with other academic institutions and industries.

The following qualifications and skills are required for these positions:

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related field by August 2025.
  • Demonstrated active research agenda supported by publications in renowned conferences and journals.
  • Experience in delivering both on-campus and online classes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


Candidates for Associate Professor must be tenure-eligible and should have the following additional qualifications:

  • Evidence of establishing partnerships with business and industry that advance the unit's mission, the research agenda, and student engagement.
  • A proven record of engaging and mentoring students in research activity.
  • A record of extramural funding.
  • A proven record of excellence in teaching, research, and service.

The successful candidate will perform specific duties and responsibilities at a Satisfactory or Outstanding level according to the university's faculty evaluation manual. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching

  • Teach using a variety of modalities: face-to-face, online (synchronous/asynchronous) and hybrid.
  • Seamlessly integrate their teaching and creative activity to benefit student growth and development.
  • Construct sufficiently detailed course syllabi before the first class.
  • Teach each class section, create and present relevant course activities, provide written feedback for assignments in a timely fashion, and evaluate student performance.
  • Hold office hours each week.


Academic Advising

  • Communicate effectively with undergraduate students and monitor their academic progress using software tools, such as EAB Navigate, RAMPATH, Banner, and other student success management systems.
  • Advise students in selecting proper courses in the major and building academic pathways to graduation.

  • Assist with curriculum development and strategic planning.

Graduate Student Research Mentoring

  • Guide graduate students in selecting thesis topics or project problems.
  • Mentor graduate students throughout the research/development process.
  • Mentor graduate students in preparing the written documents and preparing for the oral defense.

Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

  • Articulate an active research agenda in cybersecurity/Artificial Intelligence or another focus area that guides scholarly activity.
  • Produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed conferences and journals within the discipline area.
  • Facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national, and international professional conferences.
  • Collaborate with faculty within the department, across the university, or other institutions to procure sponsored research to advance the department's mission.
