HJF is seeking a Veterinary Technician III (Mouse Lab) to provide daily care for research animals (mice) and assist with research projects as directed by the Principal Investigator or supervisor. Works on assignments that are moderately complex in nature where judgement is required in resolving problems and making routine recommendations. Develops standard operating procedures.

This position will be in support of Department of Surgery/Murtha Cancer Center Research Program, Center for Prostate Disease Research.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains clean cages and racks in experimental areas; properly feeds the animals. Monitor animal health, behavior, and weight, and report any abnormalities to the supervisor.
  • Accurately keeps animal census and health records.
  • Participates in research project by collecting and organizing animal related experimental data, including animal handling, dosing, and sample collection. Conducts laboratory techniques such as tissue dissection, blood collection, and intraperitoneal injections, surgeries, therapy administration.
  • Maintain clear and accurate laboratory records, research databases, inventories, logbooks, records experimental data and detailed records.
  • Assists in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, manuscript preparations, and protocols. Performs statistical analysis of data and mathematical calculations as needed.
  • Maintain accurate breeding records and monitor colony health. Perform breeding and genotyping procedures as needed. Assist in the design and implementation of breeding strategies to maintain specific mouse strains.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary laboratory environment. Orders and maintains supplies for the laboratory and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. Ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment and report any maintenance issues.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required working with laboratory mice.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic science principles and math.
  • Strong understanding of mouse biology and behavior.
  • Experience with aseptic techniques and laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in using software tools such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to comply with occupational health and safety requirements and wear personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Preferred certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). May be working towards the degree as part of continuing education.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation:

  • The hourly pay range for this position is $24.09-$37.50. Actual salary pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
