Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The School of Art is part of the College of Visual & Performing Arts ( CVPA), a community of artists with over 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students. It is the largest visual and performing arts unit in the University of North Carolina system and is recognized for its comprehensive array of graduate programs and the success of its graduates. The School of Art enrolls over 500 undergraduate majors and offers degrees in Art Education, Art History, Arts Administration, Animation, New Media and Design, Painting, Printmaking and Drawing, Photography, and Sculpture and Ceramics. Housed in a first-rate facility and located next door to the acclaimed Weatherspoon Art Museum, the School of Art features the Greensboro Project Space gallery-an experimental site in a vibrant downtown that is also home to the Greensboro Cultural Center, Tanger Center for Performing Arts, the International Civil Rights Museum, and numerous other cultural institutions.

The Arts Administration Program is an interdisciplinary arts program that engages in teaching and research about visual and performing arts. The mission of the Arts Administration Program is to educate students in preparation for leadership, advocacy and service in the profession of arts administration and arts management. The program addresses areas of study such as programming, business strategy, nonprofit management, entrepreneurship, marketing/communications, fundraising, financial management, law, and organizational behavior specific to the arts. The Program serves undergraduate students who want to work in nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, arts businesses, start their own arts business or nonprofit, or be a professional artist. In the future, the Program may also collaborate with graduate programs in the School of Art and across the CVPA. The Program has two full time faculty members, including this position, and two adjunct faculty members.
Position Summary
The Arts Administration Program seeks to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Arts Administration with an individual with professional experience as a visual artist or in managing a visual art or design business to teach arts entrepreneurship, arts administration, and related subjects to undergraduate students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching 3 courses per semester. In the first year, courses are likely to include AAD 202 Arts Administration and Entrepreneurship, AAD 376 Micro-Enterprise for Creatives, and AAD 498 Internships in Arts Administration. Descriptions of these courses can be found at catalog.uncg.edu. Currently this position teaches undergraduate students but may teach graduate students in the future;
  • Working with the Program Director, Director of the School of Art, and School of Art faculty in shaping the long-term development of the Program with respect to curriculum, advising, recruitment, student relations, internship placement, career readiness and job search support, community and cross-campus collaborations, new programs, and more;
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students. In the future, advising and mentorship may include graduate students;
  • Conduct research and/or creative activity that contributes to the candidate's field of expertise to satisfy progress towards tenure;
  • Provide Program, College, University, and professional/community service as required.


The successful candidate will:

  • Have current knowledge of the national and international field of professional practice and arts entrepreneurship in the visual arts;
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in teaching;
  • Have experience or an interest in online teaching;
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in advising students and/or mentoring early career employees;
  • Have experience with and commitment to inclusive teaching and career mentoring practices
  • Demonstrate ability to contribute ideas and competently execute teaching and service responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's degree or higher in arts administration, arts management, arts leadership, studio art, design, or related field in the arts, business, or management, or a Bachelor's degree plus equivalent professional practice.
  • Professional experience as an artist and/or arts entrepreneur and/or management-level positions in an arts organization, business, such as a museum, gallery, design agency, or studio.
  • At least one semester as an instructor of record at the university level or other relevant teaching experience, such as courses or workshops for professional artists.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year as an instructor of record at the university level.
  • At least three years of professional experience as an artist and/or arts entrepreneur and/or management-level positions in an arts organization, business, such as a museum, gallery, design agency, or studio.
