Position Highlights

The Department of Public Health Practice and Translational Research invites applicants for the position of Coordinator, SMP HIV. The primary purpose of this position is to enhance the Community Engagement and Outreach Programs' services specific for the unsheltered community in southern Arizona. Under the supervision of the FOCUS grant Principal Investigator and the HIV Coordinator, this role will focus on providing comprehensive HIV/STI testing and screening services. For newly diagnosed HIV-positive participants, the position will ensure linkage to appropriate care services with continued follow-up. For HIV-negative participants, additional services such as PEP, PrEP, behavioral health, or referrals to medical and social services will be provided.

This position is committed to delivering quality health-related information and referral services in a nonjudgmental and stigma-free manner. The role also involves conducting outreach-based services to reach individuals at high risk for HIV/STI infections, delivering prevention and education messages, and distributing materials. The position requires odd hour work including evenings and weekends to effectively reach and support the community's need.

This position is required to attend weekend events and past experience working with the unsheltered population.

Duties & Responsibilities

HIV & STI Screening/Testing:

  • Provide HIV and STI screening/testing services with the Street Medicine Phoenix (SMP) team
  • Conduct brief risk assessments and assist users in creating individualized prevention plans based on their results
  • Collect and process blood (finger-stick and venipuncture) and STI specimens, preparing them for laboratory processing
  • Communicate HIV test results to participants

Site Coordination and Relationship Management:

  • Coordinate existing and new sites for program implementation. Maintain relationships with community partners
  • Contribute to the creation of abstracts and manuscripts
  • Participate in conferences and meetings arranged by funders, including travel as needed

Documentation, Reporting, and additional duties:

  • Document provided services into multiple databases for the state, funder, and program
  • Build and Maintain files and data for reporting purposes
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall mission and objectives of the Community Engagement and Outreach Programs which include driving the mobile health unit or other UA vehicles, assist with set-up and clean-up of events, taking mobile health unit for maintenance checks, etc.

Cultural Humility and Crisis Intervention:

  • Provide culturally humble, relevant, and appropriate services at venues catering to gay/bisexual men
  • Offer crisis and short-term intervention services as needed
  • Ensure participants receiving crisis counseling are referred to licensed professionals and essential support services
  • Provide direct support, including attending healthcare appointments and following up on care plan goals for newly diagnosed participants

Client and Community Education:

  • Deliver clear, understandable, current, and accurate information to clients, consumers, and community members
  • Provide education on HIV and STI prevention in a respectful, empathetic, and non-judgmental manner, free of stigma
  • Offer a variety of prevention interventions and services to individuals in community settings, especially those at high risk for HIV infection

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth understanding of HIV and STI prevention, screening, and treatment protocols.
  • Familiarity with community health principles and public health best practices.
  • Awareness of cultural competency and humility, especially regarding the LGBTQ+ community and marginalized populations.
  • Ability to conduct HIV and STI tests, including blood (finger-stick and venipuncture) and specimen collection.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to provide clear, accurate, and empathetic information to clients and community members.
  • Knowledge in data management, documentation, and report preparation.
  • Ability to manage crises calmly and effectively, including de-escalating skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with community partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple sites, ensuring consistent delivery of services
  • Ability to contribute to academic outputs, such as abstracts and manuscripts, and presenting at conferences and meetings.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage time effectively
  • Ability to provide non-judgmental, stigma-free services to diverse populations
  • Ability to understand and share the feelings of others, recognizing the struggles and challenged faced by individuals without stable housing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) required.
