About the Position

Responsible for the development, implementation, and presentation of judicial development programs in support of organizational goals and objectives for the Maricopa County Justice Courts. Works with judges, committees, experts, faculty, other government and educational entities, and consultants to provide educational programs for judicial officers including Justices of the Peace, Pro Tem Judges, and Hearing Officers. Serves as core faculty for key sessions, filling in for faculty when they cancel, tutoring new judges who need assistance, serving as a mentor for new judges who need extra help learning their jobs, and working with a pool of mentors who provide one on one, hands-on assistance to new judges as needed. This position also administers a call-in help line program to provide a resource to judges who need assistance. This position is expected to work on multiple simultaneous projects, exercising sound judgment and making independent decisions to achieve expected outcomes.

We Require

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school

  • Five years of experience as a judge, judge pro-tem, or practicing attorney in a trial court setting

  • Must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application

Job Contributions

  • Develop, oversee, coordinate, deliver, and revise initial and continuing education and training programs for judicial officers

  • Serve and present as faculty

  • Oversee other mentors who assist judges with one-on-one, hands-on assistance as needed

  • Staffs a call-in help line program to provide a resource to judges without law clerk assistance, or otherwise. Answer questions from judges relating to the law and legal research. This position does not advise judges on how to rule on specific cases

  • Working with subject matter experts, designs, develops, and revises legal educational material, contribute substantive expertise to program and material development

  • Staff committees and other ad hoc work groups, incorporating committee recommendations into program curriculum and taking the lead on committee projects and appropriate follow-up activity

  • Review training programs, curriculum, and other educational resources and make recommendations for procurement and posting

  • Act as a resource by providing information regarding trends in continuing professional education, best practices, best methods, and techniques to engage this audience

  • Coordinate with administrative staff to maintain records of all planning and implementation activities, program attendance, and evaluations

  • Generate or direct necessary correspondence related to program development and implementation as well as other appropriate marketing materials and strategies; exercise independent judgment in communication with program participants, committees, and faculty

  • Develop and implement program/project timelines and checklists; make appropriate assignments and ensure sub-projects are completed on time; coordinate workflow and work product for assigned programs

  • Monitor statutory, rule, administrative orders, and code changes, and work with MCJC Operations to implement the changes

  • Network with other judicial officers and professionals

  • Serve as a Pro Tem Justice of the Peace in order to keep skills sharp; observe best practices; and mentor others

  • Work primarily occurs in an office setting with remote work available
