About the Job

Projects: The successful applicant will be expected to perform independent analyses of existing datasets in the following projects. The listed effort and order of priority might shift somewhat depending on data release dates, reporting deadlines, and publication opportunities.

Project 1. LyRA (40% time)
analysis of NGS sequencing of circulating cfDNA
bulk RNAseq analysis
ATAC-seq analysis
16S rRNA microbiome analysis
integrating multi-omics data
artificial intelligence (machine learning) applications

Project 2. ORBIT (30% time)
single cell 3' longitudinal analysis (10X Chromium platform)
10X platform spatial genomics analysis (Visium and CytAssist)
10X platform single cell sequencing analysis (3' and Flex)
pseudo bulk analysis from single cell sequencing data
integrating multi-omics data

Project 3. ORBIT Microbiome analyses (10% time)
16S rRNA NGS data analysis

Project 4. ORBIT Proteomics (5% time)
LC-MS/MS proteomics bioinformatics
multi-omics integrations

Project 5. eBAT spatial genomics (5% time)
analysis of spatial genomics data of sarcomas from laboratory animals that received different treatments

Project 6. Shine On (5% time)
cell ontogeny and functional assignment using existing atlases from single cell RNA sequencing
artificial intelligence (machine learning) applications

Project 7. COED (5% time)
next generation exosomal RNAseq
artificial intelligence (machine learning) applications

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
The successful applicant will hold a BS or a BA degree in or related to the biological sciences plus four years of relevant work experience, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years. In addition, the applicant should document evidence of direct experience with bioinformatics analysis and handling of tumor/cancer datasets.

Required skills:
The successful applicant will show:
A strong command of biological principles, including evolution and natural selection
A basic understanding of neoplasia and immune function
Command of R and/or Python computing platforms is essential
Essential experience mapping data to species specific genomes/proteomes and performing analyses from open source and custom generated experimental datasets, including one or more of the following (but not limited to these methods) is also essential:
single cell RNA sequencing
spatial genomics, including integration of functional regional relationships
outstanding laboratory etiquette and evidence of experience working with teams
evidence of collegiality, specifically addressed in letters of reference
Proficiency with Linux and the ability to work from a command line

Desirable skills:
A master's or equivalent advanced degree in bioinformatics/computational biology with a capstone project from an accredited university program.
Experience performing analyses from open source and custom generated experimental datasets or knowledge of one or more of the following (but not limited to these methods) is desirable:
bulk next generation RNA sequencing (RNAseq)
whole exome/whole genome sequencing (WES/WGS)
cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis
circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis
assay for transposable accessible chromatin using sequencing (ATAC-seq)
metagenomics (16S rRNA next generation sequencing and/or shotgun metagenomic sequencing)
proteomics (mass spectroscopy data)
other 'omics platforms (lipidomics, phosphoproteomics, metabolomics, etc.)
A strong grasp of MySQL and an ability to operate/handle biological databases
A strong ability to communicate work clearly and concisely and liaison with other biologists/bioinformaticians regarding findings

About the Department

The Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department provides instruction to veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students. We also improve the health of companion animals by educating veterinarians, providing medical and surgical services, and generating new knowledge through clinical research.

Teaching

Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty members are responsible for a significant portion of the clinical training program for third- and fourth-year veterinary students, as well as small animal internship and residency programs. Faculty members also participate in the veterinary medicine and comparative and molecular biosciences graduate programs.

Research

Faculty and staff are actively involved in clinical and basic research, as well as specialized programs such as the Animal Cancer Care and Research program, Minnesota Urolith Center, and Surgical Research Laboratory. Research efforts are supported by the Clinical Investigation Center, which coordinates clinical trials.

Service

Veterinary Clinical Sciences faculty members provide clinical services in the Veterinary Medical Center and offer consultations and continuing education programs for practicing veterinarians in the community.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $29/hr - $37/hr; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
