Position Summary |
The Director for Communications and Marketing in the School of Nursing (
SON) is the subject matter expert regarding external communication, marketing, and public image. The Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the school's communications plan, external marketing, public relations, and other outreach activities. The Director also manages the SON's website and social media accounts. The Director works with the Dean and
SON stakeholders such as
SON senior leaders, directors, staff and students, communication peers across campus, and University Communications, to ensure the greatest public visibility for the school. As the
SON subject matter expert, the school's public image is their primary responsibility, as negative consequences of poor representation could mean the loss of future students, faculty, supporters, and donors. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, implement, and assess SON marketing & communications plans for various constituencies (including general audiences, prospective students, alumni, partners, stakeholders and advisory board, regional and national media.
- Develop digital and print materials including SON's newsletters, The Spartan Nurse, alumni publications, press releases and more
- Press release writing and distribution; statement and fact sheet writing; and feature story writing;
- Manage marketing and logistics for special events;
- Serve as primary contact for external marketing and media, in cooperation with University Communications;
- Develop and maintain communication and relationships with other local, regional and national nursing organizations;
- Develop and maintain active relationships with Director of Advancement, SON Advisory Board, and alumni engagement activities
- Develop and manage the budget for communication and marketing activities
- Help maintain contact information and relevant database and track alumni accomplishments both for internal reporting and public relations purposes.
The Director will also help define, articulate, and promote the
SON Spartan Nurse brand with the goal of solidifying the
SON position as one of the best places for nursing education as well as for faculty/staff employment in the state and nation. |
Minimum Qualifications |
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in relevant field.
- 2-3 years professional experience in marketing, publicity, and communications.
- Excellent writing and editing abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently with high, positive energy.
- Experience with social media.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates |

Preferred Qualifications |
- Graduate degree in communications (e.g., mass media, strategic communications, public relations, or similar), journalism, or marketing.
- 3 or more years in a communications or related position.
- Strong proficiency with design and computer graphics with an ability to create print and web materials of all types.
- Ability to creatively use social media for marketing and communication purposes.
- Experience with managing and updating websites and knowledge of web-based analytics.
- Additional professional certification in related area.
