Job Summary

Medical Assistants provide non-licensed medical support to medical care providers in an outpatient setting. Incumbents room patents; set up equipment and instruments; independently perform, and/or assist providers with performing, exams and procedures, including administering injections; with proper provider authorization, provide instructions, training and advice to patients; call in prescriptions; clean and calibrate equipment; clean and stock exam rooms; and provide proper documentation in patient chart. Incumbents may also provide front office services on a routine or back-up basis.
Positions at this level provide the full range of duties described above. Incumbents may also have the following duties:
1. Provide one or more front office services on a regular basis and routine and/or
2. Serve as lead to a group of medical assistants
Must travel to clinic locations as needed.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Minimum of two (2) years Medical Assistant experience.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • To administer injections, must have written evidence of validation for training and competency in medication administration by injection and skin testing.
  • Must have Certificate of Completion from a Medical Assistant training program.
  • Ability to utilize relevant medical terminology.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and provide excellent customer service to the target audience.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to excellence in patient care as prescribed by relationship-based care practices.
  • Ability to demonstrate accountability and professionalism.
  • Ability to support performance improvement and evidence-based practice within the scope of practice.
  • Basic understanding of technology as it pertains to federal regulations to patient privacy.
  • Ability to support unit leadership with additional task as assigned.
  • Ability to stay organized and complete job duties.
  • Ability to anticipate unit needs and independently follow through to ensure they are thoroughly met.
  • Ability to interact and maintain communications with multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using electronic medical records system.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Department Overview

The UCDH Department of Radiology provides diagnostic radiological services to adult and pediatric inpatients and outpatients.

Department Specific Job Scope

Provide non-licensed clinical support as a medical assistant to the medical care provider(s) within the department/clinic assigned and per operational need. May provide support for specialty providers based on skills, training, and demonstration of clinical competencies. Room patients: call patient from waiting area using appropriate identifiers, keep patients appraised of wait times. Obtain and record height, weight, blood pressure, vital signs, reason for visit (chief complaint), history, verification of medication allergies, pain screening, and other information as directed. May obtain test results and records, as needed by provider to assist with diagnosis and treatment. Prepare and position patient for exam and/or procedure, set up equipment and instruments, maintaining sterile technique as required and independently perform or assist provider with performing exams and procedures. Administer medications as directed, following University policies and procedures, pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines relating to medical assistants. Collect, prepare and process specimens per departmental guidelines, including recording appropriate information or results in patient medical record. Provide patient transport/escort as needed, following safe patient transport guidelines. Observe patient for adverse reactions following procedure or medication administration.

Follow emergency procedures, including CPR, and/or notify provider of baseline changes, as dictated by practice protocol. Maintain confidentiality is all aspects of patient care. Adheres to patient care and nursing standards in care delivery within scope of practice. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for patient care.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
