Job Summary

Works under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner and performs various general respiratory care duties to include respiratory care treatments, oxygen administration, suctioning, and arterial blood gas puncture and analysis. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care or arrange for the provision of care for neonatal to geriatric patients.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status.
  • Interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements and ensures and documents that age specific needs are being met as described in the department policies and procedures. Provides and assesses effectiveness of patient and family education.
  • Performs respiratory care treatments and oxygen administration.
  • Suctions patients and obtains and runs ABG samples.

Physical Requirements

Work requires frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Maybe exposed to hazardous work environment this includes contagious patients and biohazardous materials. Rapid coordination of eyes and hands to fingers. Sufficient noise and disruptions to cause distractions and stress. Hazardous working conditions in which individual is exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentation, chemicals, or body fluids.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Currently enrolled in good standing in an accredited Respiratory Care educational program approved by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) and successful completion 1 year of such program required. Registered with the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board (NCRCB) as an RCA required. Completed competency evaluations for each of the duties of the job required. BLS required per policy guidelines. Additional certifications per facility/policy standards.

Job Summary

Performs all aspects of direct respiratory care according to physicians orders and/or approved protocols. Consults physicians on effectiveness of therapy and makes appropriate recommendations. Provides appropriate ventilator support and maintains and monitors other cardiopulmonary life support equipment. Maintains and properly utilizes respiratory care equipment.

Essential functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge in various modes and methods of oxygen delivery and the equipment needed for each and can conduct prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate oxygenation.
  • Administers therapeutic procedures, understanding the purpose and benefits, and possible effects associated with each.
  • Independently evaluates current therapies using appropriate judgment and protocols, making proper recommendations concerning plans of care and patient education needs.
  • Works independently in all patient care areas and assists co-workers with patient care whenever possible.
  • Documents therapy and results as required by hospital, department and regulatory agencies. Communicates information to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
  • Performs and evaluates blood sampling analysis with a thorough understanding of the values, and the importance and treatment of abnormal results.
  • Completes annual proficiency evaluation of respiratory care equipment and procedures.
  • Is proficient in the electronic medical records and its interface with the Respiratory Care Department.

Physical Requirements
Requires repetitive physical activity. Able to walk and stand to perform duties. Ability to lift materials 20-50 pounds. Ability to move patients of all age groups. Adequate hearing and eyesight are necessary. Exposures to working environment that may include odors, low lighting, and crowded working conditions.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Graduate of an AMA-approved school of Respiratory Care. Associates RRT or RRT Equivalent required, Bachelor's Degree preferred. Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of North Carolina. BLS required per policy guidelines. Advanced certifications per facility policy/standards. For free-standing Emergency Department and Virtual Critical Care, 2 years critical care experience required. Advancement complies with the requirements of the Respiratory Therapist Clinical Ladder. Experience, approved certification, and education as outlined in Respiratory Therapist Clinical Ladder.
