Description and Requirements

The location of this position is Chicago, IL

Core responsibilities include managing team and help guide and accelerate product research. The role requires managing a team of highly technical resources who are researching new technologies and building proof of concepts and prototypes that showcase state-of-the-art technologies for our next generation devices. Be a part of a high-impact team developing technologies that will dramatically shape how people and their devices interact.

Scope of Responsibilities:

The candidate will be directly responsible for leadership and management of Lenovo Research MTI Chicago personnel and budgets. Focus is in the domain of applied research that enable AI scenario specific models, with core focus in software and sensor development while having the knowledge to integrate into mobile and PC systems/components. The candidate will be part of an exciting and dynamic environment, creating AI-based user experiences with today's most advanced devices - smartphones, tablets, PCs.

Specific duties include:

  • Responsible for the leadership and management of the research; development and technology transfer of research solutions for responsible development programs; including the research and development of products that meet the needs of the company's customers; provides the company with significant competitive differentiation against competitive companies; and support the revenue growth requirements of the business
  • Establishes staffing/resource plans to determine appropriate mix of sourcing opportunities (internal and external). Responsible for overall organizational effectiveness
  • Build proof of concepts and prototypes that showcase research for our next generation devices
  • Perform research and system integration of software and hardware to deliver in the area of AI, computer vision, natural language processing, context awareness, connectivity, scenario specific model development, and other relevant research areas
  • Attend technical discussions with Lenovo and Motorola Architects from Lenovo Research, Lenovo business groups, vendors, industry forums, software providers, and academic conferences
  • Write patents and other publications that enhance and preserve the company's Intellectual Property portfolio
  • Incorporate new ideas and approaches into projects to improve the design or the development process

About Our Team:
Lenovo Research is the innovation engine of Lenovo with research centers across the globe including the Mobile Technology Innovation
(MTI) research lab in Chicago, Illinois and Raleigh, North Carolina. This lab has a friendly and dynamic team of researchers and engineers
with very diverse backgrounds and strong technical expertise. We are passionate about incorporating the latest technologies in computer
vision, image processing, computational photography, machine learning and artificial intelligence into today's most advanced products:
smartphones, tablets, PCs, and greatly improve the consumer experiences.
What You'll Do:
You will be working with a group of dedicated and experienced colleagues on one or more of the current research projects. You will
participate in regular team meetings, brainstorming sessions, team building events, and other company activities. You will have opportunities
to contribute to the business by solving actual technical problems with innovative ideas, try out your idea by writing code and testing your
code, work with the development teams to integrate the solutions into products, collaborate with other cross functional teams, file patent
applications, and make technical presentations.
This specific role will include the responsibility to help identify image processing user scenarios, prioritize problems that need to be solved,
lead the design of models and solutions to those problems, participate in regular team meetings, brainstorming sessions, team building
events, and other company activities. You will have opportunities to contribute to the business by solving actual technical problems with
innovative ideas, try out your ideas by writing code and testing your code, file patent applications, and make technical presentations to senior
executives.

Minimum Qualifications:
MS degree (required) or Ph.D. (preferred) in CS, CE or related field, or Bachelor degree with more experience
~15 years' R&D experience in AI and CS using deep learning in academic or industrial domains.
* Expert in leading team in designing, implementing, analyzing, and testing deep- learning solutions in edge AI libraries like tflite.
* Experience in quantizing and optimizing the inference latency and memory requirements of neural networks.
* Proficient programming skills in Python and, C++
* Proficient English communication skills
* Ability to work in Chicago, IL (relocation may be provided)

Preferred qualifications:
* Publications in top-tier research conferences (ICCV, ECCV, CVPR, etc.)
* Experience with OpenCV/OpenGL/OpenCL and other computer vision libraries
* Knowledge of processor and /OS architecture of PCs and Android phones
* Embedded software development skills
* Understanding of image quality metrics and great imaging experience.
* Background in ISP, multi-frame/multi-camera algorithms and optics is a significant advantage.
