HJF is seeking a Scientist II to develop and supervise research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of research approaches and concepts to potential research and invention protocols, products and problems. Develops new proposals and protocols.

This position will be in support of Department of Pediatrics, Division of Military Child and Family Research and Division of Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications, including proposal development, hypothesis generation, project design, development of analytic plans, and writing. It is anticipated that this will initially be done in partnership with existing faculty, but will be achieved independently with time.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty within Pediatrics, the Uniformed Services University and external partners to advance research and programming in support of military pediatric health, with focus on mental health and developmental health care.
  • Plans, executes, and oversees epidemiological research including use of large data from the Military Health System Data Repository.
  • Supports qualitative research activities through study design and analysis
  • Monitors the scientific literature. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals, presents research results at national conferences and collaborates on University-wide projects to advance research and service delivery.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards including reports to funders.
  • Collaborates with other technical and professional staff, including for data management and statistical analysis. Trains and supervises technical staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral Degree required.
    • Focus in Health and/or Social Services preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable complex statistical analysis and qualitative techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis packages such as STATA, SAS, R, and/or Python required, proficiency with SAS a plus.
  • Experience with NVivo or other qualitative research software is desirable.
  • The ability to obtain and/or maintain a T1 Public Trust w/ CAC.

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Work Arrangement

  • This position is a hybrid position that requires at least 2 days on-site per week.
  • To be considered candidates must be within commutable distance to worksite or be willing to relocate.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$125,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
